No one is sure what triggers the hiccup reflex. A common explanation is that it’s caused by irritation or stimulation of the nerve that connects the brain and the diaphragm.
Although they’re harmless, they can be annoying. There are hundreds of home remedies out there, and everyone has a favorite. But before you try scaring them out of someone, tell them to try one of our favorites: Swallowing a spoonful of dry sugar can stop hiccups in minutes.
The sugar is believed to modify the nerve muscles that are telling the muscles in the diaphragm to contract irregularly.

Not only are your eyes the window to your soul, but they are also often the best windows to your health. By looking into your eyes, a doctor and optometrist can tell a lot about your general health and can gain insight into your overall health as well as determine eye health and vision during a comprehensive eye exam. An optometrist can sometimes be the first medical professional to spot diseases like diabetes and glaucoma that can lead to blindness and other major medical issues. In fact, some systemic and chronic diseases can be detected with an eye exam. And some diseases, such as diabetes, can adversely affect your vision in addition to your overall health.
March is Save Your Vision Month - a celebration started by members of the American Optometric Association all the way back in 1927 to remind people about the importance of vision and eye care. Save Your Vision Month raises general public awareness and targets at-risk groups to remind them of the importance of regular and comprehensive eye exams to detect eye health problems, general health issues and vision difficulties and to take care and charge of your own health and eye health.
With life expectancy figures continuing to climb, managing eye disease successfully can be essential for people to live healthy, happy, and productive lives!
Diabetes, Your Eyes and Health
Since over 33% of people with diabetes don’t know that they have it, an eye exam can be the only clue to detecting this potentially life-threatening disease. Changes to the blood vessels in the eye can signify various stages of diabetic retinopathy and left untreated, it can cause blindness. For those suffering from diabetes without knowing it, the detection and treatment of this disease can mean relief on many levels.
Other eye diseases, like glaucoma, may cause vision damage and eventually blindness without the person ever experiencing any symptoms. During a comprehensive eye exam, the optometrist measures the pressure within the eye and examines the optic nerve in the eye, thereby determining the existence of glaucoma.
In the United States, diabetes is responsible for 8 % of legal blindness, making it the leading cause of blindness in adults 20-74 years of age. Every year, from 12,000 to 24,000 people lose their sight because of diabetes-related vision problems. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication. All of these eye problems can cause severe vision loss and even blindness. Diabetic eye disease includes glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. Glaucoma, cataracts, and corneal disease are more common in people with diabetes and contribute to the high rate of blindness. People with diabetes are almost twice as likely to develop glaucoma and cataracts than people without diabetes. The longer someone has had diabetes, the more common it is for individuals to have glaucoma and risk also increases with age. People with diabetes also tend to get cataracts at a younger age and have them progress faster. The longer someone has had diabetes, the more likely they are to have diabetic retinopathy, a term for all disorders of the retina caused by diabetes. Often there are no symptoms or pain in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy and vision may not change until the disease becomes severe. Finding diabetic retinopathy early is the best way to prevent vision loss.

Risk of diabetic retinopathy can be greatly reduced. According to The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), better control of blood sugar levels slows the onset and progression of retinopathy. The study found that the group that tried to keep their blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible had substantially less eye, kidney, and nerve disease (New England Journal of Medicine, September 30, 1993).

Obesity Can Lead to Diabetes
Obesity is one of the major causes of Type II Diabetes and is one variable that can be adjusted and controlled by you to prevent onset of diabetes and thereby halting formation of diabetes related eye diseases as well.
Certain risk factors like age, family history, and ethnicity cannot be altered, but a change in lifestyle that includes a healthier diet and increased physical activity with or without weight loss may help reduce your risk.
The immense rise in Type II Diabetes in recent years, the serious health risks and costs associated with diabetes, and the fact that several of the risk factors are modifiable, have created great interest in the importance of diabetes prevention. If you have high blood pressure, are overweight, smoke, or use alcohol or drugs, you can help lower your risk by modifying your lifestyle. Obesity is a major modifiable risk factor for Type II Diabetes. Lowering weight and blood pressure and quitting smoking can significant positive impacts on health and lifestyle.
One in three Americans born today is predicted to develop diabetes as a consequence of obesity.It is estimated that at least half of all diabetes cases would be eliminated if weight gain could be prevented. Of particular concern are the current rates of overweight and obese children, due to inactivity and increases in caloric intake of almost all countries over the last 20 years.
“The rising levels of obesity worldwide are likely to drive the prevalence of diabetes even higher than present forecasts”, according to Professor Pierre Lefèbvre, President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
A study done by the Harvard School of Public Health and published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that being overweight and obese was the single most important factor that predicted who would develop Type II Diabetes. During a 16 year follow-up period the study concluded that Type II Diabetes could be prevented by living a healthier lifestyle and risks decreased with weight loss, diet and exercise. Another study conducted by The Finish Diabetes Prevention Study Group found that with weight loss and better physical activity levels alone, people at high risk of developing diabetes could reduce their risk by more than 50%(The New England Journal of Medicine 2002; 346: 393-403). Control your weight with Native Remedies’ EcoSlim, Triple Complex Slimmer’s Assist, Detox Drops as aids to help you lose weight safely and naturally while substantially improving your health and reducing health risks.

July 19th, 2009 -- Posted in Herbal Remedies, Natural Remedies, Natural Remedies for Quitting Smoking |
Do you have “Quit Smoking” on your list of New Year’s resolutions as you have had for many years past? Make THIS the year you quit smoking and kick the habit for good because you are worth it!
A study published recently in the Journal of Clinical Psychology says that people who make New Year’s resolutions have higher rates of success at changing their behavior than people who don’t make resolutions.
“At least 40 percent of adults make one or more resolutions each year, and at least two-thirds of these pledges concern life-threatening behaviors - tobacco smoking, obesity and inactivity, for example - which psychologists have extensively studied and successfully treated” according to an article published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology (Vol. 58(4), 397-405 (2002)). The decision to quit smoking is one that only you can make. Others may want you to quit, but the real commitment must come from you! Quitting permanently is the final, and most important, stage of the process. You can use the same methods to accomplish this as you did to help you through withdrawal. Think ahead to those times when you may be tempted to smoke, and plan on how you will use alternatives and activities to cope with these situations.
Why Quit?
Health concerns usually top the list of reasons people give for quitting smoking. Smoking can, of course, cause lung cancer and lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, but few people realize it is also a risk factor for many other kinds of cancer as well, including cancer of the mouth, voice box (larynx), throat (pharynx), esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, liver, cervix, stomach, colon and rectum, and some leukemias. These progressive lung diseases are usually diagnosed in current or former smokers in their 60s and 70s. You’re also more likely to suffer from hardening of the arteries and shortness of breath. Smokers are twice as likely to die from heart attacks as nonsmokers. Smoking causes premature wrinkling of the skin, bad breath, bad smelling clothes and hair, and yellow fingernails.
When you smoke, you’re exposing yourself to more than 4,000 chemicals, including cyanide, benzene, and ammonia — and at least 40 of those chemicals can cause cancer and smoking hurts every organ in your body. Smokers between the ages of 35 and 70 have death rates three times higher than those of people in the same age range who have never smoked. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently estimated that adult male smokers lost an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lost 14.5 years of life because of smoking. No matter what your age or how long you’ve smoked, quitting will help you live longer.
People who stop smoking before age 35 avoid 90% of the health risks attributable to tobacco. Even those who quit later in life can significantly reduce their risk of dying at a younger age. Ex-smokers also enjoy a higher quality of life with fewer illnesses from cold and flu viruses, better self-reported health status, and reduced rates of bronchitis and pneumonia. Regardless of your age or smoking history, there are numerous advantages to quitting smoking. There are several visible and immediate rewards to quitting as well as long-term benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and improving your health in general. Quitting helps stop the damaging effects of tobacco on your appearance including premature wrinkling of the skin, bad breath, stained teeth, gum disease, bad smelling clothes and hair, yellow fingernails. Some benefits that will gain gradually in the first few weeks after quitting will be that you will notice that food tastes better, your sense of smell will return to normal, your ordinary activities will no longer leave you out of breath, and your health and life insurance premiums should drop.
How to Quit?
There is no one right way to quit, but there are some key elements in quitting smoking successfully. These crucial factors include:
* Making the decision to quit
* Setting a quit date and choosing a quit plan
* Dealing with withdrawal - Take it day -by day — or even trigger -by trigger. This may sound like “addiction-speak,” but it works. To approach the process by thinking, “I can’t wait until I’ve been nicotine-free for a week” won’t help you with that craving you get with your morning coffee on the very first day.
* Maintenance or staying off cigarettes
Your body benefits as soon as you stop smoking. Within 20 minutes of that last cigarette, your body begins a series of healthful changes that continue for years. This deep healing is mostly invisible to the person experiencing it except for the gradual loss of a smoker’s cough, an increase in energy, and the like. After a couple of days, your abilities to smell and taste improve and your damaged nerve endings start to repair themselves. Within a few months, walking and other physical activities will become easier and your lung function will increase by up to 30 percent. After five years, you’ll have nearly halved your odds of getting lung cancer.
Look at the amazing and remarkable healing progression over time:
20 Minutes After Quitting
Your heart rate drops.
12 hours After Quitting
Carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
2 Weeks to 3 Months After Quitting
Your heart attack risk begins to drop.
Your lung function begins to improve.
1 to 9 Months After Quitting
Your Coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
1 Year After Quitting
Your added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s.
5 Years After Quitting
Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker’s 5-15 years after quitting.
10 Years After Quitting
Your lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker’s. Your risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases.
15 Years After Quitting
Your risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a nonsmoker’s.

Compared to Smokers, your…
Stroke risk is reduced to that of a person who never smoked after 5 to 15 years of not smoking
Cancers of the mouth, throat, and esophagus risks are halved 5 years after quitting
Cancer of the larynx risk is reduced after quitting
Coronary heart disease risk is cut by half 1 year after quitting and is nearly the same as someone who never smoked 15 years after quitting
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease risk of death is reduced after you quit Lung cancer risk drops by as much as half 10 years after quitting
Ulcer risk drops after quitting
Bladder cancer risk is halved a few years after quitting
Peripheral artery disease goes down after quitting
Cervical cancer risk is reduced a few years after quitting
Low birth weight baby risk drops to normal if you quit before pregnancy or during your first trimester the benefits of quitting

Do You Know That Smoking and Asthma are
Interrelated?
What is the link between smoking and asthma?
As you have read, smoking is especially and extremely harmful to the respiratory system. So for people with asthma, tobacco smoke frequently tops the list of the most common triggers of an asthma attack. An asthmatic does not have to smoke to be affected, as even second–hand smoke can trigger asthma attacks or cause permanent harm to the airways, making it easier to have an asthma attack in the future. Anyone with an asthmatic condition who smokes should immediately quit. Smoking can greatly complicate an asthmatic condition by damaging the lungs, even if it does not trigger an attack. The airways in a person with asthma are very sensitive and can react to many things, or “triggers.” Coming into contact with these triggers often produces asthma symptoms. Tobacco smoke is a powerful asthma trigger. When a person inhales tobacco smoke, irritating substances settle in the moist lining of the airways and can set off asthma episodes. Often, people with asthma who smoke keep their lungs in a constant state of poor asthma control and have ongoing asthma symptoms. Also, when a person with asthma is exposed to second-hand smoke, he or she is more likely to have asthma symptoms. Children with asthma are especially sensitive to second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke harms children with asthma even more than adults. When a child is exposed to tobacco smoke, his or her lungs also become irritated and produce more mucus than normal. But the child’s lungs are smaller, so smoke can cover them quickly. Children of parents who smoke are also more likely to develop lung and sinus infections. These infections can make asthma symptoms worse and more difficult to control.

July 19th, 2009 -- Posted in Herbal Remedies, Natural Flu Remedies, Natural Remedies, Natural Remedies for the Immune System |
It’s that time of the year again! Along with all the holidays and the festive season celebrations, we also get our annual ‘flu epidemics. Every year, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) stresses the importance of vaccination against the ‘flu, particularly for those members of the population defined as ‘at risk’ - this includes young children, the elderly and people whose immune system may be compromised due to various medical conditions like AIDS, asthma, diabetes, etc. Patients undergoing medical treatment which may lower immune functioning (e.g. chemotherapy patients) are also encouraged to receive a ‘flu vaccine.
Why is there a shortage of ‘flu vaccine?
According to the CDC, the Chiron Corporation, a major manufacturer of the ‘flu vaccine, will not be able to produce any vaccine for the 2004/2005 year, following the UK’s MHRA suspension of this company’s license to manufacture the ‘flu vaccine Fluvirin. This means that the US supply of trivalent inactivated vaccines (or ‘flu shots) will be reduced by almost 50% for the upcoming ‘flu season! For this reason and to help cope with demands, the CDC has recommended that ‘flu shots be administered only to populations defined as being at special risk.
Instead of the ‘flu shots, the CDC has recommended that healthy people use a nasal-spray vaccine (LAIV) which contains live (weakened) strains of the three major influenza viruses. Because of the risk of side effects and the theoretical possibility that people receiving the LAIV vaccine can transmit the virus to others with compromised immune systems, LAIV is recommended only for healthy people between the ages of 5 and 49 and is not recommended for caregivers of people with chronic illnesses, health workers or those caring for very young children. Side effects of the LAIV can include runny nose, headache, vomiting, fever (especially in children) and muscle aches.
What else can I do to protect myself against influenza?
According to the CDC, there are steps which can be taken to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading the ‘flu virus. Here are some recommendations:
1. Keep your distance from and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
2. If you are sick, stay at home and keep your distance from other people to prevent spreading the ‘flu virus.
3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and turn your head away from other people when you cough or sneeze.
4. Wash your hands often to protect yourself from germs.
5. Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth.
6. To keep your immune system healthy, get enough sleep, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, exercise regularly, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and keep stress levels to the minimum.
6. The use of anti-viral drugs can also help to protect you against contracting the ‘flu virus.
Natural Remedies Can Help!
The major pharmaceutical companies are not the only ones with solutions to the ‘flu virus. Herbalists and Naturopaths have had thousands of years experience in treating people with influenza and boosting immune functioning. Looking at the recommendations by the CDC as outlined above, here are some additional recommendations from Native Remedies:
1. There are some excellent herbal alternatives to the pharmaceutical anti-viral drugs which have been recommended by the CDC and the World Health Organisation. Native Remedies Immunity Plus Formula contains a selection of the most powerful and effective anti-viral herbs from around the world and can be of great benefit in boosting immune functioning to protect the system against the ‘flu virus. It may also be used at the very first signs of ‘flu or cold symptoms in order to stop the virus in its tracks. Immunity Plus has an added benefit over and above the pharmaceutical anti-virals in that it also contains antibacterial herbs which act as natural anti-biotics. This means that you would be less likely to develop secondary infections from the ‘flu virus. Although the ‘flu virus comes with very uncomfortable symptoms, it is the secondary infections like pneumonia and bronchitis that are potentially very dangerous.

How Do I use Immunity Plus?
According to Michele Carelse, Clinical Psychologist and formulator of Immunity Plus, it is best to take a 6 weeks course of Immunity Plus at the very beginning of winter. Thereafter ‘booster’ courses of about a week can be taken at eight - ten week intervals. At the very first signs of ‘flu symptoms, take a 5 - 10 day course to stop the virus in its tracks. Michele also recommends using Immunity Plus for about a week to protect yourself if you are exposed to someone with the ‘flu.
2. If you have been following an unhealthy lifestyle or have been exposed to environmental toxins, we recommend a three week course of our Detox Drops along with the Immunity Plus. Please be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day during this time.
3. Studies have shown that people who are suffering from stress or depression will have lowered resistance to illness and are much more likely than others to become ill, especially with viral infections. If you are depressed or suffering from stress, protect yourself by taking a 6 month’s course of our Mindsoothe Capsules, accompanied by the Native Remedies Triple Complex Nerve Tonic for extra protection.

With proper diagnosis, prevention and treatments, there are no restrictions on what people with asthma and allergies can do in life. With proper management and education, people dealing with Asthma and Allergies can control the diseases and can live healthy, productive and normal active lives!
Asthma is a disease of the lungs where the airways become blocked or narrowed causing difficulties in breathing. These effects are usually temporary, but they cause shortness of breath, breathing trouble, and other symptoms. Asthma is a chronic disease affecting nearly 20 million Americans. Worldwide, asthma prevalence ranges from 1.9 percent to 36.7 percent in various countries, according to the International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Children.
Asthma is commonly divided into two types: allergic or extrinsic asthma and non-allergic or intrinsic asthma. Although asthma can cause severe health problems, treatment can control it and allow a person to live a normal and active life.
Allergic and non-allergic asthma are mainly chronic inflammatory diseases of the airways. This means that people with asthma have inflamed airways which causes two secondary symptoms: (1) The bronchi, the airway branches leading to the lungs, become overly reactive and more sensitive to all kinds of asthma triggers such as allergens, cold and dry air, smoke and viruses. Also, (2) the lungs have difficulty moving air in and out, which is called airflow obstruction. Together, these symptoms cause the tertiary symptoms the coughing, wheezing, tight chest and worse.
Asthma occurs when airways become temporarily blocked or narrowed due to exposure to allergens (“allergic asthma”), irritants, strenuous exercise, anxiety or other triggers. Symptoms include:
* Sudden shortness of breath
* Difficulty breathing
* Tight chest
* Wheezing or coughing
People with asthma have inflamed airways which are super-sensitive to things which do not bother other people and are called “triggers.” Asthma triggers vary from person to person based on whether one has allergic asthma or non-allergic asthma, but some of the most common triggers include:
* Allergens
* Irritants in the air
* Respiratory Infections
* Exercise
* Weather
* Strong Emotions such as fear, anger or excitement
* Certain medications
Asthma episodes do not always occur right after a person is exposed to a trigger. Depending on the type of trigger and how sensitive a person is to it, asthma episodes may be delayed. Each case of asthma is unique just like you.
Asthma doesn’t have to impose any big limits on quality of life. An asthma management plan is important and something developed by you and your physician to help you control your asthma, instead of your asthma controlling you.
There are many things that can be done, including natural treatments, to take control of asthma and its symptoms to minimize any impact on life and activities. Asthma medications may be either inhaled or in pill form and are divided into two types—quick-relief and long-term control such as Native Remedies’ BioVent (long-term control) and BronchoSoothe (quick-relief) which are 100% natural, safe and effective remedies for natural asthma relief and to assist with the management, control and prevention of asthma and can be a part of your asthma management plan.

Many, and in fact most, cases of asthma, particularly among children, have allergies as a major component.
ALLERGIES
Allergies are diseases of the immune system and are characterized by an overreaction of the human immune system to certain substances that usually cause no reaction in most individuals. “Antigens,” or protein particles like pollen, food or dander enter our bodies through a variety of ways. If the antigen causes an allergic reaction, that particle is considered an “allergen” – and antigen that triggers an allergic reaction. These are substances (or “allergens”) that are eaten (peanuts, shellfish, etc.), breathed into the lungs or inhaled (pollen, dust mites, etc.), injected (bee stings, certain medicines, etc.) or touched (poison ivy, latex, etc.). The immune system overreaction can result in symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, skin rashes or hives, itching and itchy and scratchy nose and throat. In severe cases it can also result in rashes, hives, lower blood pressure, difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, and even death.
Allergies are grouped by the kind of trigger, time of year or where symptoms appear on the body: indoor and outdoor allergies (also called “hay fever,” “seasonal,” “perennial” or “nasal” allergies), food and drug allergies, latex allergies, insect allergies, skin allergies and eye allergies.
More Americans than ever before say they are suffering from allergies. It is among the country’s most common, yet often overlooked, diseases. Allergies are not only bothersome, but many have been linked to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illnesses (such as sinusitis and asthma). Additionally, allergic reactions can be severe and even fatal. Allergies have a genetic component. If only one parent has allergies of any type, chances are 1 in 3 that each child will have an allergy. If both parents have allergies, it is much more likely (7 in 10) that their children will have allergies.
There are no cures for allergies. Allergies can be managed with proper prevention and treatment. Good allergy treatment is based on the results of allergy tests, medical history, and severity of symptoms. It can include three different treatment strategies: avoidance of allergens, medication options and/or immunotherapy (allergy shots).
Some people don’t take allergy medicines because they don’t take their symptoms seriously and say “Oh, it’s only my allergies.”. The result may be painful and worse complications such as sinus or ear infections. Don’t take the risk because there are other options available to treat allergy symptoms rather than the traditional allergy medications, allergy shots, or consulting an allergist.
There are many safe non-prescription medicines available to relieve allergy symptoms such as Native Remedies’ AllergiClear and SOS HistaDrops which are 100% natural, safe and effective herbal and homeopathic remedies to naturally clear allergies and protect against all Airborne and Seasonal Allergies, Allergic Rhinitis and Hayfever!
